HOW TO INSTALL MATH WORKOUT

_____________________________________
TABLE OF CONTENTS
Basics ............................ p. 1
Special Instructions:
To run on a floppy ........... p. 3
To run on a network .......... p. 4
To run on certain monitors ... p. 5
Issuing the MWINSTAL command ..... p. 6
======= INSTALLATION: BASICS =======
WARNING:
Some memory-resident programs (TSRs) conflict with MATH
WORKOUT. If you get a message "All EMS buffers are
locked", or experience any other problems, try running MATH
WORKOUT again after having removed TSRs one at a time.
Verify that you have the right number of disks.
----------------------------------------------
If you have 5.25" 360k drives, you should have two disks.
Otherwise, you should have only one disk. That is, you should
have one 3.5" 720k disk or one 5.25" 1.2mg disk.
Verify that the program disk(s) contains all the files.
------------------------------------------------------
The list of files is found in the file named MWFILES.DOC
To print out that file, insert the program disk (Disk 2 if you
have two disks) into the A drive, at the DOS prompt type COPY
A:MWFILES.DOC PRN, and hit [Enter].
To see a list of the files on the disk(s), insert the disk in
the A drive, at the DOS prompt type DIR A:, hit [Enter].
If there are any files missing, contact me immediately.
Do not attempt to install.
Make a copy of the program disk(s).
----------------------------------
Use either the DISKCOPY command or the COPY command.
To use the DISKCOPY command:
---------------------------
The disks you copy TO must be the same type as the disks you
copy FROM. At the DOS prompt, type DISKCOPY A: B: to copy the
disk in the A drive onto the disk in the B drive. If your
drives are lettered differently, enter the appropriate letters.
Also, this command will destroy files on the destination disk,
so, the disk you copy to should not have any files on it when
you start. Repeat if you're using 360k disks.
NOTE: You can diskcopy from A: to A:, e.g. DISKCOPY A: A:
To use the COPY command:
-----------------------
Type COPY A:*.* B: to copy all of the files from the disk in
the A drive to the disk in the B drive. If your drives are
lettered differently, enter the appropriate letters. Repeat if
you're using 360k disks.

"To run on Certain Monitors" pertains to you if you have one of
the following display configurations:
1. Hercules Graphic Card and a monochrome monitor.
2. Hercules Monochrome Card and a color video card.

VERY IMPORTANT !

IF: 1. you are installing from two disks, AND THIS IS
NOT A DISK PROVIDED BY DOBRIN COMPANY

OR 2. you received MATH WORKOUT on a single disk, or
downloaded it from a BBS, and you are GIVING A
COPY TO A FRIEND ON TWO DISKS,

THEN, YOU MUST:
----

Make sure that you place the files on the two disks
as per the list on the 2nd page of MWFILES.DOC

WHAT INSTALLATION DOES
----------------------
Installation does 5 things.
1. Creates the subdirectory you choose to install to
if you install to a hard drive (the default is MWV1).
2. Copies all files to wherever you install to.
3. Creates a subdirectory called DATA under the
subdirectory you installed to.
4. Moves the sample .HIS files to the DATA subdirectory.
5. Creates a file called MWHISTP.ATH which is used
to tell MATH WORKOUT what the History Path is.

======= SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR RUNNING ON A FLOPPY DRIVE =======
NOTE: You can only run MATH WORKOUT off a floppy drive if
you have a 3.5" drive or a 5.25" 1.2mg
drive. You can't run off a 360k drive !
Read and follow the directions in the INSTALLATION:
BASICS section first.
Use the copy of the program disk, not the original.
NOTE: You can install to another floppy if you want.
e.g. You can install to a floppy on the B drive
from a floppy on the A drive.
VERY IMPORTANT: While you run MATH WORKOUT, you must
keep the Program Disk in the drive.
Before you proceed to install, read the section on ISSUING
THE MWINSTAL COMMAND.

======= SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR RUNNING ON A NETWORK =======
You must obtain a site license to run on a network.
Read and follow the directions in the INSTALLATION:
BASICS section first.
Only one user (the first user) at a time will have "write"
access to MATH WORKOUT Program files. This means
that only that user will be able to add, modify, or delete
user names, user passwords, and student ID numbers.
Since such changes occur rarely, this should not present
a major problem. However, you should be aware of it.
History files are a different story. Score History files
are "owned" by each user because their filenames are
determined by the user code. The Comprehensive History file
is shared, but it takes only a split second for MATH WORKOUT
to open, write, and close the file, so it is extremely
unlikely that a conflict will occur.
MATH WORKOUT should run on any Network, but compatibility
can not be guaranteed.
MATH WORKOUT will issue a "read-only" warning to everyone
who runs it, except the first user. The message is:
"File is read-only. Load it without a reservation (Y/N)?Y"
Just hit [Enter] when you see this message.
You may permanently suppress this "read-only" message by
issuing the following commands:
SETDISP MWV1 /W for MATH WORKOUT
SETDISP MWBONUS1 /W for the BONUS PROGRAM
You'll see "Finished!" after you issue the command.
If you install multiple copies of MATH WORKOUT, make sure you
install each copy in a different subdirectory. If the
History Path is on a hard drive, it must be different for
each copy. If it's not, several users with the same user
code will write to the same Score History file, which will
result in "nonsense" graphs. If the History Path is on a
floppy, and each computer on the network has its own floppy
drive, then, of course, the History Path may be the same for
every copy of MATH WORKOUT.

======= SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR RUNNING ON CERTAIN MONITORS =======
This section only pertains to you if you have one of the
following display configurations:
A. Hercules Graphic Card and a monochrome monitor.
B. Hercules Monochrome Card and a color video card.
A. If you have a Hercules Graphic Card and a monochrome monitor,
do one of the following:
1. Add a line to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file
containing MSHERC
Note: You must either copy the file MSHERC.COM
(supplied with MATH WORKOUT) to the
subdirectory containing your AUTOEXEC.BAT
file or add the program subdirectory
to your path statement.
2. Issue the MSHERC command before running MATH WORKOUT,
the Install Program, or the Bonus Program.
3. Add the command MSHERC to the beginning
of MWRUN.BAT, MWINSTAL.BAT, and MWBP.BAT
B. If you have a Hercules Monochrome Card and a color video card,
do one of the following:
1. Add a line to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file
containing the following command MSHERC /H
Note: You must either copy the file MSHERC.COM
(supplied with MATH WORKOUT) to the
subdirectory containing your AUTOEXEC.BAT
file or add the program subdirectory
to your path statement.
2. Issue the MSHERC /H command before running
MATH WORKOUT, the Install Program, or the Bonus
Program.
3. Add the command MSHERC /H to the beginning of
MWRUN.BAT, MWINSTAL.BAT and MWBP.BAT

======= ISSUING THE MWINSTAL COMMAND =======
Step 1. Go to wherever the program files are located.
That is, change the current path to the one
containing the program files.
- If you're installing from a FLOPPY drive,
then insert the program disk into the drive,
and change the current drive to that drive.
- If you're installing from a HARD drive,
just go to the subdirectory that contains the
program files.
Step 2. Type MWINSTAL
Step 3. Hit [Enter]
